Trauma Sensitive Schools
Posted: March 2, 2017
Trauma sensitive schools are a new concept in education focusing on providing a supportive environment for children who have experienced trauma in their lives. By providing support and linking to community resources, trauma sensitive schools lower absenteeism, suspension, and expulsion rates. Instead of being punished for negative behavior, students are counseled by staff to determine what underlying issues may have been present. Trauma sensitive schools involve all of the school personnel including janitors, cafeteria workers, bus drivers as well as the academic and administrative staff. Having had great success in four states already, it is a trend that is rapidly growing.
